 SOUTH ATLANTIC REGION
UNIFIED PROJECT 2007-2009

During each administration, the National Garden Club, Inc. sponsors just one award category that is competitive between the eight Regions.  It is entitled THE EMERALD AWARD - #12.  The award is only given at the end of the second year of said administration.  A Certificate of Merit and a $200 award may be awarded the Region for coordinated activities in accordance with the programs and objectives of NGC.  ALL states in the Region must participate.  Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia are included in the South Atlantic Region.

Each of the Regional Directors choose their own projects.  With Director Anne Brown choosing the theme Sharing the Joy of Gardening, she planned that the emphasis be on sharing.  It is her hope that your efforts in sharing your gardening experience will being joy to your members and to the lives of people we touch.  Anne has purposefully chosen categories of the project that are not of great difficulty.

Healing Garden - $50. Award to a club for creating a gardening experience for patients at a rehab or therapy center.  Might include placing a mobile garden on a table or cart with rollers, taking gardening to patients; placing bird feeders outside windows where patients can enjoy them or creating an outside garden with raised beds for patients with limited mobility

Meditation Garden - $50. Award to a garden club or group of clubs for creating a garden at a church or place of worship (may include a bench or seating area) or creating a gardening nook with seating at a hospital or veteran’s medical center where patients and family members could spend time and visit (a picnic table could be included).

Community Respite Garden - $50. Award to a council or club with 30 or more members who create a garden spot with a bench at a town square, a park or a community gathering place.  $50. Award to a club with fewer than 30 members creating a garden spot with a bench at a town square, a park or a community gathering place.

Educational Garden - $50. Award to a club establishing a garden plot at a school involving students.  Signage should be used as an educational tool.

Patriotic Garden - $50. Award to a club or council planting and landscaping at a Blue Star Memorial, veteran’s center, police station, fire station or post office.  Community could be part of this project.

Special Award - $50. Award will be given to the state organization with the highest number of award entries for the SAR Unified Project.

A regular Book of Evidence is necessary for these awards.  Follow the rules for the SAR Awards in your directory.  You may include six pages, front and back.  Include drawings of plans, financial reports and before and after photographs if applicable.
Scale of Points – Presentation – 5; Scope of activity of activity initiated by Regional Director – 45; Involvement of member states – 25 and Results of project – 25.

The local clubs should send their Books of Evidence to their State SAR Unified Project Chairman (rather than the regular State Awards Chairman).  The State SAR Chairman will oversee judging for each state’s winners.  They should then send ALL entries on to the Regional SAR Unified Projects Chairman by December 31, 2008.  This Chairman will provide judging at the Regional level and then disassemble all of the Books of Evidence into a single one to be sent to the NGC Awards Chairman.
