NATIONAL PRESIDENT’S PROJECT –NURTURE THE EARTH-PLANT NATIVES
Submitted
by Loretta F. Lively
NGC President, Barbara May’s project for 2007-2009 is NURTURE THE EARTH-PLANT NATIVES. Barbara would like us to reestablish native plants and wildflowers in our communities. Native species are those that naturally occur in our area and have not been introduced by human action. The possibilities are numerous. Look around your community and beautify your area with local native plantings. This can be done at schools, libraries, parks, historic sites, entrances to town, garden club headquarters etc. “Let’s Go Native” is a grant program funded by the Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc. that will feature civic development projects using local native plantings. Grants will be awarded up to $1000.00 each and will require matching funds including some “in kind” if desired. The project must be new or a restoration of an existing site and must begin after June 2007 and be finalized by May 2009. The application/project requirements deadline is Nov. 15, 2007. For more information go to www.gardenclub.org. Another Presidental project is the SCHOOL GARDEN PROJECT which targets elementary grade schools. Students, teachers and sponsoring garden clubs are encouraged to create various native gardens. This garden can be large/small, moveable or stationary. The School Garden Project must be based in an elementary classroom or on school grounds and must study and focus the importance of native plants in the area. A garden must be created and incorporate education of native plants. All States in SAR have Native Plant Societies where information of native plants in your area can be obtained. Let’s all make our communities greener and more beautiful by taking the time to plant natives and wildflowers. Do keep me informed of any projects you plan to undertake in your community or state and let us support our NGC President’s project.
