Kentucky is the place to be in March 08! The Garden Club of
Kentucky,
Inc. anxiously awaits the arrival of its gardening friends to beautiful
and historic Louisville. From atop the spires of Churchill Downs
to
the Secret Garden At Yew Dell the city offers visitors an opportunity
to experience
Kentucky's Unbridled
Spirit first hand.
You don't want to miss a minute of the excellent programs, tours, and
meetings planned. Treasures from the GCKY and top names in the
horticulture industry await those attending. workshops from
Monrovia
and Ball Industries will provide a glimpse of exciting plants being
introduced to the markets.
A reception honoring Anne Brown, South Atlantic Region Director, and
Barbara D. May, President of NGC, will be held Tuesday evening.
The
Garden Club of Frankfort invites you to join in celebrating our leaders
and the many opportunities of garden club.
Jeff Hohman is one of the most energetic passionate speakers in the
state. He renews his audiences' sense of awe and wonder as he
shares
the natural world encountered every day through his job with East
Kentucky Power. Blessed are those students who encounter Jeff in
the
classroom.
South Atlantic Region was one of the earliest partners with Yew Dell in
restoring the esquisit secret garden at the estate of Theodore and
Martha Klein. Today the garden is a testing site for Helleborus,
100
hardy ferns, and Asarum (hardy gingers). The holly alee that
flanks
the garden is popular photo site for brides. Yew Dell Gardens is
featured in 001 Gardens You Must See Before You Die by Rae
Spencer-Jones. Dr. Cappiello will present a program and a tour of
the
gardens. Many of the unusual plants in the garden are being
evaluated
for the market.
Barbara D. May, 40th President of National Garden Clubs, brings
exciting information and ideas for our consideration. Her
emphasis for
this administration is the planting of native plants and wildflowers
across the country.
"Nurture
the Earth-Plant Natives" focuses member's
attention on those issues that will benefit the earth and nourish our
sense of preservation and conservation. Join us as we welcome
Barbara
to our region.
Phil Tamplin will inspire us thursday morning with a program on our
newest symbol, the bluebird. Members will appreciate the
dedication
required of Mr. Tamplin in monitoring numberous bluebird boxes.
Some
lucky attendees will take home a bluebird box for their gardens.
Spouses have a opportunity to plan their own program with Larry
Mengel. The Executive Inn is only ten minutes away from numerous
major
attractions in the area and two minutes from the airport!
Come prepared for an informative, fun-filled meeting dotted with
goodies related to the world loved and nurtured by gardeners everywhere.

to show techniques and secrets of the ultimate garden.

Jeff Hohman - For the Love of
Nature

Hold on to your hats for a fast
paced, highly entertaining program. Jeff Hohman is the Manager of
Marketing and Natural Resources with the East Kentucky Power
Company. He works to develop meadows under power lines where
native flowers can grow and encourages companies to locate power lines
away from endangered wildflowers.
There is not a cave he won't explore, a frozen pond he won't bust into,
or trail he won't hike. Jeff has recently received the 2002
Industrial Scientist of the year Award (KAS), the wildlife Steward
Award (KDFWR), the 1997 Naturalist of the Year Award (KSNH), and The
Garden Club of Kentucky Enrichment Award. although the space on
his wall of fame may be running out, his enthusiasm for the Touchstone
Evironmental programs is not.
Dr. Paul Cappiello and Yew Dell
Gardens
Wednesday, March 26
Dr. Paul Cappiello is a driving
force behind the rebirth of Yew Dell gardens in Crestwood, KY.
Theodore and Martha Lee Klein spent 60-plus years developing their 33
acres farmland into an exquisite private estate, a successful
commercial nursery and an extensive collection of unusual plants and
outstanding gardens. Through the ears, Klein collected over one
thousand unusual speciment trees and shrubs which were displayed and
evaluated in his arboretum. He also worked to develop new plant
varieties for the regional landscape, amassing an impressive list of
more than 50 unique introductions over his professional career.
Today, this amazing garden is undergoing a rebirth under the
stewardship of Dr. Cappiello and its amazing staff and volunteers.

Banquet Speaker - Wednesday,
March 26
A long time member of the Beth
Shalom Garden Club of Needham, she is a Master Accredited Flower Show
Judge and Instructor in Design, Procedure and Symposium.
As the President of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts in
1993, she has also served as a Trustee of the Massachusetts
Horticulture Society and will also receive their gold medal award.
She is the recipient of multiple Flower Arranging Awards and was for
many years involved with the New England Spring Flower Show. She
edited the NGC books, "Designs Made Easy" and "Holiday Happenings."
During her coming administration her theme "Nurture the Earth - Plant
Natives," will focus on planting native plants and wildflowers across
the country as well as other ecological benefits which will enhance our
environment.
Phil Tamplin - Get Hooked on
Bluebirds
Thursday, March 27
Phil Tamplin, vice-president of
the Kentucky Bluebird Society, became hooked on bluebirds after
attending a Kentucky Ornithological meeting. The speaker, Dr.
Wyane Davis, a retired biology professor from the University of
Kentucky inspired Phil to start several bluebird trails. He began
by putting up and monitoring over 100 boxes with the help of some
friends. The second year he religiously monitored over 300 boxes
in the Cornell Cavity Nesting Bird Study. He has trails in
Jefferson, Oldham, Shelby and Henry counties in Kentucky and Clark
county in Indiana. Phil has inspired his children who share the
duties of monitoring the trails and spend lots of time together.
SPOUSE
TOUR
Larry Mengel, husband of The Garden Club of Kentucky's President, will
act as tour guide. This will be a tailored tour based on the
nterest of the participants. Meet Larry at 9:00 a.m. in the
Executive Inn main bar. After discussing options, aking plans,
the group will launch. The options are:
- Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory Tour - 2 hours, $8
each
- Frazier International History Museum Tour - 2 hours, $7 each
- Kentucky Derby Museum Tour - 2 hours, $9 each
- Lunch at the Cardinal Cafe - $menu
- Belle of Louisville Cruise/Lunch - 11:30 - 2:00, $24 each
- Play a couple of games of chess or checkers at the hotel
You can tour as much or as little as you choose, but lunch is a
definite! Transportation is provided.
